Preparation of Chloroform from Ethanol.

Explanation:

  • Ethanol is first reacted with chlorine to form ethanal which releases out hydrochloric acid.
  • Then ethanal is again reacted with an excess of chlorine gas which forms trichloroethanal along with releasing out hydrochloric acid.

C_{2}H_{5}OH+Cl_{2}CH_{3}CHO+3Cl_{2}CCl_{3}CHO

  • The trichloroethanal formed is reacted with calcium hydroxide which releases calcium formate and chloroform.

CCl_{3}CHO+Ca(OH)_{2} (HCOO)_{2}Ca+2CHCl_{3}
