Various methods can be applied…..

Kolbe’s electrolysis

Aqueous solution Sodium or postassium salts of carboxylic acids when electrolysed give alkanes. Sodium Acetate solution can be used for Ethane.

Decarboxylation reaction

When carboxylic acids heated with NaOH/CaO alkanes are obtained. Use Propanoic acid for ethane

Conversion

When carboxylic acids are reduced we get alcohols. Alcohols when dehydrated give alkenes which upon reduction give alkanes. Use Acetic acid to get ethane.

Although, we can grignard reagents to get alkanes but that should NOT be said to be ‘obtained from carboxylic acids’
