How will you prove that chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis.
Answers
Answer:Take the variagated leaf (which is partly white and partly green) and keep it for 3 days..
After 3 days keep it in dark room to destarch it.
Boil it to make it more permeable.
Do water bath in alcohol if any chlorophyll is still there.
Put the iodine solution you will see that the green part becomes blue-black and the white part remains as it is.
This shows that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis.
To prove that chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis we can perform an activity as mentioned below:
Aim: To show that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis.
Materials required: A plant with variegated leaves
Procedure:
- Take a plant with variegated leaves i.e. leaves which are partly green and partly white.
- Place the plant in a completely dark room for 3-4 days to destarch the leaves. Then keep this plant in the presence of sunlight for some days.
- Pluck a leaf and then place it in boiling water. This is done so as to make leaf more permeable to iodine solution.
- Decolourize the leaf by placing it in alcohol ( we cannot place the leaf directly in alcohol, therefore we will place the leaf in a beaker containing alcohol in a water bath). This is done to remove chlorophyll from the leaf.
- Now, put iodine drops on the leaf.
Observation: The green part of leaf will turn blue- black due to presence of starch in it whereas white part remains the same.
Conclusion: This activity shows that the green part of the plant was able to photosynthesis due to presence of chlorophyll in it whereas since there is no chlorophyll in white part. Hence, photosynthesis doesn't take place in it.
