The germinating seeds undergo aerobic respiration as they use the oxygen available inside the conical flask. As whole of the oxygen is used up by the germinating seeds, the pressure inside the flask is decreased. Hence, consequently the mercury level rises in the far end of the bent glass tube.

Aim:
To prove that germinating seeds respire aerobically
Materials Required: Germinating seeds, a flask, a beaker, straw, KOH, lime water solution, and cork
Procedure:
- Take a flask and add a handful of germinating seeds.
- Add KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) to the flask and seal the top using cork. This makes the flask airtight.
- Drill a hole in the cork and fit a straw.
- Dip the other end of the straw in a beaker containing lime water.
- Observe after a few hours.
Observation:
The lime water turns milky.
Conclusion:
The Germinating seeds respire aerobically in which they consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide.
The carbon dioxide reaches the lime water through the straw and turns it milky.
Precautions:
- The flask should be completely air-tight.
- Lime water solution should be freshly prepared.
