Silver tarnishes by reacting with hydrogen sulphide gas in the atmosphere in presence of moisture to form black compound called silver sulphide.
So, when the upper or top layer of silver turns to black, then it indicates that silver is tarnished(corroded).

When a layer of sulfide is formed on silver it is referred as silver corrosion. it happens when it comes in contact with the air.
