When one of the component of a mixture has the tendency to sublime then we use sublimation process to separate them. But here, as both the ammonium chloride and iodine are sublimate so, the mixture of ammonium chloride and iodine is separated by first dissolving the mixture in water where.

Both ammonium chloride and iodine sublime on heating. Therefore, they cannot be separated by heating. However, when we add water to this mixture , ammonium chloride will dissolve but iodine will not.On filteration , ammonium chloride will pass into the filtrate and iodine will be left as the residue .On slow heating the filtrate ,water will evaporate off leaving behind ammonium chloride.
