Basically white light is a combination of its different components that together make it ''white'' light.

so if u take a triangular prism , cut a hole in cardboard sheet , and allow light to pass throught the hole in the cardboard sheet and let it pass throught a prism , boom!

As soon as it touches the surface of the prism , it splits into its different coloured components , namely violet , indigo , blue, green , yellow , orange and red.
