The gas released is hydrogen, in which case you use the burning splint test. ... When HCl reacts with a metal, hydrogen gas will be evolved. To testthis gas, insert a burning splinter into the outlet of gas, the flame will be extinguished with a pop sound. This will confirm the gas is hydrogen.

When the acid reacts with metals , there is formation of Hydrogen gas, when we take burning candle near to it, there is pop sound , this indicates the presence of hydrogen gas.
