The simplest way to test is to see if lather is formed when it is treated with soap.
If lather is not formed properly it means that it is hard water.
There are two types of hardness:-
•Temporary hardness which is due to the presence of mainly bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium.
•Permanent hardness which is due to the presence of chlorides and sulphates of mainly calcium and magnesium.
