Answer:

In our country women still lag much behind men despite some improvements since Independence. Women face disadvantage, discrimination and oppression in various ways:

(i) The literacy rate among women is only 54 per cent as compared with 76 per cent among men.

(ii) Similarly, a smaller proportion of girl student goes for higher studies. Girls are performing as well as boys in school. But they drop out because parents prefer to spend their resources for their boys' education rather than spending equally on their sons and daughters.

(iii) The proportion of if women among the highest, paid and valued jobs is still very small. On an average, an Indian woman works one hour more than an average man every day.

(iv) The Equal Wages Act provides that equal wages should be paid to equal work. However in almost all areas of work, from sports and cinema to factories and fields, women are paid less than men/ even when both do exactly the same work.

Answer:

Women in India face discrimination and oppression in the following ways:-

  • Wish for male child: In India, there are various households where female childs are seen as a burden. Many rural areas wish for male childs and illegally abort the female babies.
  • Less education: In India, many families are reluctant in sending their female childs to school. Many families do not want to marry educated women while others think education can spoil their girl childs.
  • Sex discrimination in work: Even nowadays, many jobs provide less salary to women as compared to men. This is due to the orthodox thinking of our society by which women are greatly discriminated in the work fields. Ex. Film Industry
  • Harassment: There are various places where women are taken advantage of. THey are thought to be weak and therefore various mental, physical harassments involving rapes are committed on them.
  • Sex discrimination on labour: THere exists a lot of discrimination on labour even nowadays. People believe that women should be working at home, taking care of children, cooking, etc. while men are the bread owners of the house doing physical work.

In reality, in rural areas, many women commit to physical work such a farming, fetching water, travelling and selling products in shops.
