The participation of women in the nationalist movement in India is very significant. Women actively participated in various movements under the leadership of M.K. Their participation was in the nationalist movement was based on the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi; thus it was passive resistance. However, the participation of women in the Non-cooperation Movement was limited as compared to the Civil Disobedience Movement. Therefore, the Non-cooperation Movement did not observe the large scale participation of women.

Sarojini Naidu was one of the forerunners of women’s participation in the movement. In 1919, Sarojini Naidu became a campaigner for women’s satyagraha, traveling all over India to propagate the cause. She appealed, in particular, to women to agitate against the Rowlett Act.
