Well firstly Energy and Work are equivalent in that both are identical whether expressed in Joules or Nm. (1J=1Nm)

Energy is the energy available to do work and the power and / or amount of work done will depend upon the rate at which such energy is consumed or work is done.

So for any fixed quantity of energy the work done or power used will depend on the rate at which such energy is used.

Let is consider 1 Joule of energy or work.

Then 1J expended in 1 sec = 1 Watt

and 1J expended in 1 millisec=1 kW

and 1J expended in 1 microsecond = 1 MW.

This shows the same amount of energy can realise significantly different amount of power depending upon the rate at which energy is consumed.

This also applies to Work = Fxd Nm = m*g*h nm or kgm/sec/sec or Joules

So

1 joule = 1N*1m = 0.1kg*10m/s/s*1m

1 joule = 1000N*.001m = 10 kg*10m/s/s*0.001m

1 Joule = 1000000N*0.000001m = 100000kg*10m/s/s*0.000001m

This shows significantly more Force (“Power”) is required to move larger mass with a fixed acceleration over a shorter distance even though the same amount of energy is expended. One may achieve the same result by varying both the mass and acceleration as well. ie 0.1kg*10m/s/s =10kg*1m/ss.

So to conclude Power is the rate at which both energy is used and/or work is done
