Answer:

The thymus gland is a lobular structure located between lungs behind sternum on the ventral side of aorta. Thymus gland is site of maturation of T lymphocytes of blood. As the person gets aged, the thymus degeneration occurs resulting in decreased production of T-cells which is credited by reduced immunity. But, before thymus gets degenerated, many T-cells are already produced. The effect of removal of thymus is less if it is removed in adulthood. If it is removed in the childhood, the body would be immunodeficient as there would be no way out to fight against the infection since it is the main gland that produces antibodies in the early life of a person.
