The 'Enteric Nervous system' is considered as the second brain of the human body. This part of the nervous system controls the gastrointestinal system.

There are hundreds of millions of neurons that connect the brain with the enteric nervous system. These neurons are present as sheaths of nerves that are embedded inside the long tube-like gut walls in the alimentary canal. From the esophagus to the anus, they measure up to 9 meters end to end.

The enteric nervous system is the one and only part of the PNS or the Peripheral nervous system that can mediate a reflexing behavior even when the input from the spinal cord or the brain is absent.

It is also connected to the mood of the person which affects the action on the gut. This is due to the production of neurotransmitters like Dopamine and Serotonin that are produced in the gut and move through the bloodstream in the body. The saying 'Gut feeling' is used probably due to the emotions and mood caused by these neurotransmitters.

So, if there was no second brain, then there would not be any production of neurotransmitters in the gut and the independent actions of the alimentary canal like peristalsis would not occur.
