How would tendency to gain electrons changes as you go down a group?

Non metals are electronegative as they tend to form bonds by gaining electrons. Electronegative character or non metallic character decreases down the group. For example, among the halogens fluorine is the most electronegative and hence, the most non metallic and Iodine is the least.
