I the tendency to gain electron first increases as the number of electrons decreases, (the no of electrons in valance shell is called its valancy) increase in valancy occour while moving left to right in a periodic table, it is not possible for an atom to gain 5-6-7or 8 electrons at a time. So it can mainly gain at the most 1-2-3electrons and share the 4th one (ex carbon shares its 4 th electron). #follow
