HCl when reacts with a metal produces chlorine whereas HNO3 produces nitrogen dioxide.

(I am not sure whether the answer is right or wrong.)

we know that HNO3 is an oxidising agent ....
so if we add any aqeuos solution of metal in it , no Hydrogen gas will be released ....
But if the solution is added to HCl , the uptake of Hydrogen is noticed....
In case of HNO3 , the hydrogen is oxidised to become H2O (water)
hope it helps... keep rocking !!!
