Metals appear lustrous and form mixtures when combined with other metals. They tend to lose or share electrons when they react with other substances. They have generally high density. Every metal forms at least one predominantly basic oxide.
Most non-metals are colourless or dull coloured. They have open structures and tend to share or gain electrons when they react with other substances. Non-metals possess low density. But they do not form any basic oxides.
Metals are good conductors of electricity. Moreover, metals can conduct heat better than non-metals. If a metal piece is placed in a glass of ice water, it will get cold while a non-metal piece will not.
