How would you appericate the role of epiglottis in respiration

Epiglottis is a cartilagenous flap like structure which covers the wind pipe(trachea) when we swallow food.

this prevents food from entering our wind pipe and doesn't cause discomfort.

epiglottis is a flap like tissue which blocks the trachea when we swallow the food so as to prevents the entry of food in trachea  , but at the time of respiration , it remains open.
