Rizal was heavily influenced by European liberals, often veterans of the revolutions of 1848 (like e.g. the German physician Rudolf Virchow, liberal deputy and arch enemy of the ultra conservative chancellior Bismarck). Back during the 1848 revolutions these revolutionaries (especially in Germany) tried to avoid the senseless bloodshed, which appeared in the French revolution, or during the civil wars, rebellions and military coups, which troubled Spain during and after the Napoleonic wars (and only ended in 1975 after Franco’s death, and Spain’s entry into the EU).
