To develop a hierarchy of classification, we choose the fundamental characteristics among several other characteristics. We need to look at the fact it given character is present in a small number of organism. By choosing the basic characteristic, we can make broad divisions in living organism as the next level of characteristic is dependent on these. This goes on to form a hierarchy of characteristics.
