For developing a hierarchy of classification, we choose the fundamental characteristics among several other characteristics. We need to look at the fact if given character is present in a small number of organisms or a larger number of organisms. By choosing the basic characteristic, we can make broad divisions in living organisms as the next level of characteristic is dependent on these. This goes on to form a hierarchy of characteristics.

The characteristics which is dependent on the previous one and would decide the variety in the next level should be chosen for developing a hierarchy in classification.
