D-glucose can be converted to a mixture of ethyl α-D-glucopyranoside and β-D-glucopyranoside in the following steps:-

  1. Initially, a small quantity of hydrogen chloride gas is made to pass through a solution of D-glucose in ethanol.
  2. Attack of acid results in the formation of a carbocation. This carbocation gets stabilized by resonance,
  3. The oxygen of ethanol then attacks the resonance stabilized carbocation from either side.
  4. Therefore, a mixture of both the acetals of glucose is formed.

The mechanism of the reaction is diagrammatically explained in the attachment.
