  • It was first prepared in 1863 by Joseph Wilbrand  
  • It was widely used during first world war and it is still used by construction companies and US military.
  • It is a stable explosive and can be stored for long periods of time. It is insensitive to friction, and doesn't form sensitive compounds with metals.
  • Toluene is nitrated with a mixture of sulphuric and nitric acid to get mono-trinitrotoluene(MNT)  
  • MNT is nitrated to dinitrotoluene(DNT)
  • Then  DNT is nitrated to trinitrotoluene(TNT)
