How would you demonstrate that green plants release oxygen when exposed to sunlight?write in short.

This was in 10th..2 years ago..but I remember there being an experiment where a rat is kept in a closed jar..without plants it suffocates but with them it lives much longer..hence they could say that plants do supply the " vital " gas..as oxygen was not specifically discovered then..
