we can distinguish alcohol and carboxylic acid on the basis of their reaction with carbonate and hydrogen carbonates .

Acid reacts with carbonate and hydrogen carbonate to evolve CO2 gas that turns limewater milky .

metal carbonate+ carboxylic acid--> salt + water +

carbon dioxide
