how would you distinguish experimentally between an alcohol and a carboxlic acid?

test with sodium carbonate and litmus

alcohol is a neutral compound so it will have no effect on litmus paper.
carboxylic acid turns blue litmus red

secondly sodium carbonate has no reaction with alcohol but reacts and produces brisk effervescence reacts with carboxylic acid
