How would you distinguish monocots from dicots?

Physical differences:

  • Monocots are the plants whose seed has only cotyledons While seeds of dicots have two cotyledons.
  • Monocots have fibrous root system while Dicots have tap root system.
  • Leaves of Monocots show parallel venation while leaves of dicots show reticulate venation.
  • The leaves of monocots have equal distribution of stomata both the surfaces while the leaves of dicots have greater number of stomata on the lower surface.
  • Examples:

        Monocots: Maize, Rice etc.

         Dicots: Mango, Bean etc.
