A magnetic field is created around a bar magnet. Magnet attracts magnetic metals such as iron. When iron fillings put in the magnetic field around bar magnet, a pattern is formed by the iron filings around a bar magnet made of lines radiating outward from the North (N) and S (S) poles. The lines curve towards the opposite pole.

Explanation of the pattern formed by the iron filings/magnetic sand:
- When the iron fillings are thrown near the magnet, the iron are best magnetic attracted agents.
- These magnetic irons are highly attracted towards the magnet from the corners and edges where magnetic flux is more forming an concentric circle.
- But the middle portion of magnet does not carry the much magnetic force.
- Hence the force applied is lesser and hence the iron filling are just spreaded over the magnetic flux which is due to magnetic end pole.
