The hydroxides formed by the IA and IIA group elements are called Alkalies.
And even Metal oxides also considered as base. Such metal oxides when dissolved in water forms bases or alkalies.
Ex: CaO + H₂O → Ca(OH)₂
In the above example CaO (Calcium oxide) is base(ic) in nature, dissolved in water forms Ca(OH)₂ (calcium hydroxide) an alkali
