Copper Oxide is a dense particle that easily get sedimented at the bottom of water while charcoal is a light particle that floats on the surface of the water and can be easily separated.

By adding water to a mixture of charcoal and Cu O because CuO is insoluble in water and charcoal dissolves or floats in water or can be separated by first filtering the CuO and then by evaporation or decantation, we can seperate out charcoal.
