The soil in natural state contains lots of moisture that helps in the growth of the plants. ... If the test tube is open, the water vapors escape out in the atmosphere and if the soil is weighed before and after the heating, the difference in weight proves that soil contains water...

The most accurate method of soil moisture measurement is through weight ('gravimetric') measurements ... 2 Commercial Soil Moisture measurement devices can be classified as those that measure Tension and those that measure VWC. 3 Tension sensors include Tensiometers and Gypsum Block sensors. 4 VWC sensors include Neutron Probes and Dielectric Probes. 5 Most VWC sensors measure soil dielectric properties. To obtain actual VWC, these measurements must be scaled by a calibration curve that depends on soil type.
