1. Interphase - the vast majority of a cell's life
2. Prophase - nuclear envelope disappears and chromosomes are duplicated
3. Metaphase - duplicated chromosomes (sister chromatids) line up on midline of cell (mitotic plane)
4. Anaphase (always remember anaphase is the "active" phase) - sister chromatids split and move to opposite poles of the cell (the chromatid pairs are now called chromosomes)
5. Telophase - 2 new nuclear envelopes form and chromosomes uncoil to form chromatin
Cytokinesis - the cytoplasm divides equally into the 2 new daughter cells
cell membrane grows together and telophase and cell division is complete
