Stay calm! first

If you are outside, then move for few steps and hide in a safe place away from any structures ( buildings, lamp posts etc ) . It is good to remember that earthquakes do not kill people, structures do.

If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road. Stay in the vehicle until the shaking stops

If you're indoors, stand against a wall near the center of the building, stand in a doorway, or crawl under heavy furniture (a desk or table). Most injuries during earthquakes occur due to falling objects compared to falling of structures. Stay away from windows and outside doors. Don't use elevators to vacate the building or run outside. Don't use matches, candles, or any flame. Broken gas lines and fire don't work quite well.

There are two approaches that can be used to protect yourself when indoors.

1.Drop, Cover and Hold On (DCH)

DROP down onto your hands and knees before the earthquake knocks you down. This position protects you from falling but allows you to still move if necessary. COVER your head and neck (and your entire body if possible) under the shelter of a sturdy table or desk. If there is no shelter nearby, get down near an interior wall or next to low-lying furniture that won't fall on you, and cover your head and neck with your arms and hands. HOLD ON to your shelter (or to your head and neck) until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if the shaking shifts it around.
