The end of the compass needle which usually points north will be repelled by the north pole of your electromagnet and attracted by the south pole. You can check this against a permanent magnet with labeled north and south poles by bringing the same compass close to it.

Answer:
For preparing an electromagnet, first wrap a conducting wire through the magnetic material and connect the ends of the wire with a battery. As soon as the circuit is closed, the current will start flowing and the apparatus will become an electromagnet
If bringing the compass to one of the poles makes its north end point towards it then its the south pole and other one will be the north pole.
