Here’s the experiment.

Aim: To test the presence of starch in leaves

Materials required: A green leaf, water, alcohol, test tube, beaker and iodine solution.

Procedure:

1. Place a leaf in a test tube and pour some alcohol in it.

2. Heat some water in a beaker and put the test tube containing the leaf into the beaker. Chlorophyll dissolves in warm alcohol. The leaf thus loses its green colour and becomes colourless. This is required to clearly see any colour change on addition of iodine.

3. Remove the leaf and pour some iodine on it.

Observation: The colour of the leaf turns blue-black.

Conclusion: The leaf contains starch.
