'The Mayor of Casterbridge' is a novel in which Thomas Hardy is describing the family and social structure of 1970.

It was a deeply agrarian economy. It was the man's duty to sustain the family. Therefore, many economic decisions (like selling animals, buying various goods) were taken only by the man of the family. Economy played a very important role and it is described how it's becoming a part of the family structure.  The role of the woman is described as being not as important as the role of the man. Economy meant money, so all the financial decisions were taken by the man  in the family.

At some point the economy suffers a fall, and in the book it is described how the downfall of character Henchard follows. Lives of people were deeply connected with the agricultural economy.
