Answer:

In 1796, Edward Jenner inserted pus (taken from Sarah Nelmes, a milkmaid with cowpox) into a cut made in the arm of a boy named James Phipps.

When Jenner exposed the boy to smallpox, he was found to be immune tot the disease.

Jenner called that new method of immunisation as 'vaccination'. Hence, he is also known as the Father of Cowpox Vaccination.
