Cell division during growth is mitosis which does not involve any reduction in the number of chromosomes.
During gamete formation the cell division occurs is meiosis which involves a reduction of chromosome number.
Example : For an organism having 26 chromosome. But when it transfers the gene to the offspring , the father will have to give 13 chromosome and mother should give 13 chromosome. So that the offspring will have 26 chromosome. This is an diploid (2n)cell to haploid (n)cell number and transferred to the offspring. One (n) number of chromosome from father and one (n) number of chromosome from mother so the offspring will have 2n number of chromosome.
