Sibling care in animals
- Sibling care is observed in the animal world too, though it is more complex and difficult to identify compared to human beings.
- This is opposite of 'Sibling rivalry' more commonly observed in animals, when they compete for resources such as food, territory and mating partners.
- When we look around, we can see several examples of this phenomenon. Some such examples of are:
- Lions - Sisters stay together all their lives in groups called ‘prides’, and brothers form coalitions when they set off to conquer other prides.
- Elephants - Older sisters take care of their younger siblings by babysitting them and keeping them safe.
- Honey bees - The workers in a hive are all sisters and they raise their younger ones to maturity, feeding them honey and royal jelly.
- Termites - Older siblings raise their younger siblings feeding and grooming them until they are on their own.
- In addition to the above ones, sibling care is shown by animals like cascaded frogs, shrews, turkey, Peregrine falcon, etc.
