Sibling care nature in animals

Sibling care is observed in the animal world too, though in more complex and surprising manners.

This is opposite of 'Sibling rivalry' in animals that we have commonly heard of when they compete for resources such as food, territory and mating partners.  

Some examples of sibling care are:  

1. Elephants - Older sisters take care of their younger siblings by babysitting them and keeping them safe.
2. Honey bees - The workers in a hive are all sisters and they raise their younger ones to maturity, feeding them honey and royal jelly.
3. Cascaded frogs - The ones from the same parents release a similar smell, which helps the siblings identify each other if or when they meet up after they become adults, then they often stay together.
4. Shrews - The siblings take extra care to ensure that they all stay together and protect each other. If there is a sign of danger, they clamp down on each other's tails with their teeth.
5. Turkey – The siblings help each other to hunt and forage for food and even find a partner.
6. Peregrine falcon - The siblings play with each other as well as practice their hunting skills on one another.
7. Termites - Older siblings raise their younger siblings feeding and grooming them until they are on their own.
8. Lions - Sisters stay together all their lives in groups called ‘prides’, and brothers form coalitions when they set off to conquer other prides.

Sibling care in animals is an interesting area of study and we humans should include their brotherly or sisterly stories along with our own stories of love and care.
