Nationalism is a political and philosophical idea, that all nations are different but equal, they all have a similar right to exist and to develop their culture and language and communicate with other nations on an equal basis.

The state is the political self-organization of a nation.

There are thousands of nations, who have no state. Historically, nations tend to disappear if they cannot manage to achieve their own state. Known examples of successful nationalistic projects are Israel and Estonia. We know well, what happened to Judes and Estonians before they got their nation-states.

Nationalism was developed as a reaction against Imperialism.

Imperialism taught that ethnic cultures do not have value. Imperialists developed racism to justify ethnocides both in Africa but also in Eastern Europe.

Empires tried to build some patriotism - loyalty to the Emperor. Both Hitler and Stalin promoted patriotism. They demanded even occupied nations to be patriotic towards the occupying Empire. Who was not patriotic enough, was condemned to a concentration camp for being nationalist. Judes and others, who were not so enthusiastic towards the German Empire (Reich) but dreamed about their own nation-states, were killed.

The name Nazis means members and supporters of the National-Socialistic Workers Party - they were not nationalists. Nazis and nationalists are two opposites. Nazis tried to build a single Europe where nation-states would disappear.

After the 2WW Nazis, of course, do not call themselves nazis, but You recognize them, as they always try to fight against the right of self-determination os all nations. Nazis are those who fight against nationalism, trying to promote misunderstanding of the ideas on nationalism.

The value of nationalism and nation-states is, that nationalism makes most wars impossible. At least such imperialistic wars, where one nation tries to get supremacy over other nations. As the state is not justified as the power of government over a territory, but a local people´s self-organization, it will be senseless to occupy other nation´s territory.

Students can promote nationalism by reading about nationalism from the right sources, and explaining to the hidden nazis and to the dummies, what the nationalism is about
