When you pass a current through a solenoid/coil, there is a magnetic field produced around it. ... So when we pass a DC voltage through a coil, the domains rearrange in such a way that all the domains are facing in the same direction and a magnetic field isproduced around the coil and thus itbehaves like a magnet.

right hand thumb rule is used to determine the direction of the magnetic field produced due to a current carrying circular wire
the direction of the magnetic field at the centre of the circular wire is perpendicular to the plane of the circular wire
