Why do you think India has so many different names? Give reasons.
India is a country of multiple religions, regions, societies, languages, kingdoms & histories. Hence because of every reason (religions, regions, societies, languages, kingdoms & histories) we got a name & few of them sustained till this date like: India, Bharat & Hindustan.
Below are details and reasons of each of these names:
INDIA:-
As a region across Indus (Sindhu) river this region was known as India, this name formalized as a name for a particular specific boundary and as a country after British Empire created clear cut map for it as a country.
So the name India became name of a Country.
Being known in world widely by this name only, The country retained this name as official name.
BHARAT:-
It is well known that Bharat is the name derived from the legendary king 'Bharat'.
Associated with his name the region was called as 'Bharata Varsam' or 'Bharat Varsa'.
Bharata Varsam was the area ruled by Emperor Bharat and this name was used to distinguish this region from other continents of the world.
This name is mentioned in many Puranas and hence becoming its one of the first identities of land, this is used as another official name for the country.
HINDUSTAN:-
Hindustan is name originated from Persian again derived from the river Sindhu (Indus). This name has formed with Hind + Stan
This name was denoted to mostly norther part of present India and Pakistan and later on for complete Country.
Though this name is not an official name of the Country.
