Hughes Distributing Company, a southwestern distributor of health and beauty supplies is faced with a housekeeping problem in their receiving areas. On several visits to these departments, the plant engineer has found them cluttered with trash and empty cardboard shipping cartons. An examination of the receiving operations indicates that when a large shipment of material is received the items are removed from their shipping cartons and placed on racks. The empty cartons and packing materials are left on the floor. Periodically, or when the order unpackers cannot move, someone flattens and stacks these refuse materials. Question: Using the approaches in decision making, suggest a method for reducing or eliminating this housekeeping problem.

We are required to solve the problem of reducing or even eliminating the problem of housekeeping by using the approaches of decision-making.

  • The approaches to decision-making can be broadly divided into two.
  • The first one is the Target-based Approach and the second one is the Problem-oriented Approach.
  • We need to know what to target like the empty carton boxes and the packing materials.
  • Out of this what can the company sell as scrap or what can the company dispose of?
  • This work should be allotted to the Handling Department to take care of.
  • The second approach is the Problem-oriented approach which deals with the problem of disposing of the cartons and how can it be done at the least cost to the company.
