Medicines like antibiotics are consumed by humans to treat diseases. While they are useful discoveries and have prolonged the life expectancy of humans and improved the quality of life, they have several unexpected ill effects on the environment.

  • The environment is made up of three spheres- lithosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. Medicines like antibiotics leave adverse impacts on each of these spheres in the following ways.

  • The Lithosphere- Antibiotics consumed by humans reach the lithosphere through urine and faeces in active form. They are then absorbed by plants. Thus, the consumption of medicines leads to contamination of the soil and plants.

  • Moreover, the packaging of medicines, which later gets discarded is usually non-biodegradable and adds to the waste in landfills etc.

  • The Hydrosphere- The harmful chemicals present in antibiotics reach water bodies when runoff from the land reaches the rivers and seas. This then enters the bodies of aquatic animals and causes changes in aquatic microbial processes by eliminating essential bacteria.

  • The Atmosphere- The toxic emissions from factories that produce such medicines usually go into the air untreated. This leads to contamination of the atmosphere.

  • Hence, although medicines have certain applaudable effects when it comes to the treatment of diseases, their adverse impacts on the environment also need to be paid attention to.
