Answer:

Fill in the blanks:-

  1. peptides
  2. saliva
  3. Amylase
  4. Oesophagus
  5. villi (singular:- villus)

Define the following:-

  1. A tooth (plural teeth) is a hard, calcified structure found in the jaws (or mouths) of many vertebrates and used to break down food.
  2. The oesophagus (gullet) is part of the digestive system. The oesophagus is a muscular tube. It connects your mouth to your stomach.
  3. A long tube-like organ that connects the stomach and the large intestine. It helps to further digest food coming from the stomach. It absorbs nutrients and water from food so they can be used by the body. The small intestine is part of the digestive system.
  4. The act or process of discharging undigested or waste material from a cell or organism.

Answer the following questions:-

  1. Digestive enzymes are a group of enzymes that break down the food into their smaller building blocks, in order to facilitate their absorption by the body.
  2. Absorption is a process in which a substance is assimilated in another substance. For example, when we use a paper towel to clean up a water spill, the water is absorbed by the paper. In this example, the paper towel is the absorbent and water is the absorbate.
  3. Assimilation is the process in which digested food is absorbed by the “cells of the body”. It is a fundamental part of digestion. This is followed by the transfer of food to the portal systems of the body where it undergoes chemical changes due to the chemical secretion of the liver and other cells of the body.
