Answer:

The circulatory system consists of three independent systems that work together: the heart (cardiovascular), lungs (pulmonary), and arteries, veins, coronary and portal vessels (systemic). The system is responsible for the flow of blood, nutrients, oxygen and other gases, and as well as hormones to and from cells. There are three types of circulation found within humans. Systemic circulation, pulmonary circulation and portal circulation. Systemic circulation describes the movement of blood from the heart via arteries to the periphery, and back to the heart via the veins. The four major functions of the cardiovascular system are:

•To transport nutrients, gases and waste products around the body.

•To protect the body from infection and blood loss.

•To help the body maintain a constant body temperature ('thermoregulation')

•To help maintain fluid balance within the body.
