Civilizations developed around Rivers because their waters provided places to hunt and fish. Also, as the rivers flooded, the lands around them became fertile. This allowed them to support farming. This is especially true of the Nile River, which flooded the same time each year.

Water resources and river beds were considered to be the significant places for the rise of any civilization.

Explanation:

They proved to be the source of drinking water, irrigating the farmland and enhanced farming and cultivation of crops which increased the food production.  

These water sources also proved to be the great means for transportation and develop trade relationships with other group of people. River beds were often seemed to be fertile which allowed greenery. This helped in domestication of animals. Animals’ aid is sought in ploughing the field. They can be easily fed with green grass as there is a river shore nearby.  

Many great civilizations thrived on the shores of great Rivers. Indus valley civilization survived in the shores of River sindhu and River Sarswathi. Egyptian civilization arose in the banks of river Nile.
