Because resources are not evenly distributed all over the world.
Human populations will always be close to water sources. You can’t have farms without water, and you can’t have cities without farms.
It is true that nowadays, with refrigeration and advanced transportation, you can spread out a lot more than in the past. But you still need water to have a city, and it’s a lot cheaper to get your water closer to water sources.
Another point to take into account is transportation and commerce. The reason that most cities in Brazil are closer to shores is because ports were (and still are) exceedingly important for our colonial life. Most people, therefore, lived close to ports. Living deep into the jungle was just not feasible back then, and it’s still quite costly nowadays.
